Money Matters: Avoid ATM Fees

Stop Paying To Use Your Own Money

Avoid ATM Fees

It's costing you more every year to have access to your own money. ATM fees and surcharges are steadily increasing, building profits for the banks and costing the average family hundreds of dollars a year.

The amounts may seem insignificant: $1.50 here and $1.00 there, but if you routinely use ATMs to withdraw small amounts of cash from your bank account, you may be paying up to 15% or 20%.

Both your own bank and the bank that owns the ATM will usually charge you a fee for using an ATM that doesn't belong to your bank. According to Bankrate.com, the average surcharge for using an ATM that doesn't belong to your own bank is $1.50, and more and more banks are charging $2.00. Add your bank's fee for using an out-of-network ATM, and you may end up paying a total of anywhere between $3.00 and $4.00.

If you withdraw $20 at a time, which many people do, you end up paying a 15% to 20% surcharge just to get the use of your own cash.

Some banks require you to use ATMs instead of live tellers in order to have free checking. If your bank is one of these, and you use an ATM that isn't owned by your bank, you'll pay fees.

ATM fees are big business and are adding millions of dollars to many banks' bottom lines, at your expense. Based on data from the US General Accounting Office, bankrate.com estimates that consumers will pay $2.2 billion this year in ATM surcharges.

How Can I Avoid or Reduce ATM Fees and Surcharges?

  • Plan your cash withdrawals when you can access your own bank's ATMs.

  • Look for other ATMs that don't surcharge.

  • Plan ahead, and withdraw more cash at a time.

  • Use your ATM card to get cash back when you purchase something at a point-of-sale cash register, such as the grocery store.

  • When traveling, use travelers checks, personal checks, or credit cards.

  • Avoid ATMs in convenience stores, hotels, casinos, restaurants, and similar locations. They tend to charge higher fees.

  • Refuse to do business with banks that charge ATM fees and surcharges.

He Said, She Said (Part 2)

Okay, I am not a gossip but since I know the real story, here it is. Messiah happens to be Vivica A. Fox's stylist and decided he wanted to throw her a fab birthday party. She signed a contract that said she would not be getting paid to appear at the party. On the night of the party, Ms. V was supposed to get picked up in a Phantom and be driven to the venue but, the car didn't arrive so, she ended up riding in Star Jones's Mercedes.

Messiah

Anyway, now Ms. V is salty. Swizz Beatz was also in the area celebrating his album release party so he and his people wanted to drop in on the party. Ms. V obliged along as they remembered who the party was really for. Ooh, she must've been salty again because when they came in, it definitely turned into Swizz Beatz's party. And damn, throw some more salt in it, Ms. V found out that the club was charging as much as $70 to let people in. So she damn sure wanted a cut. The club owners said fine but after only the next morning after they count it all. She wasn't having that so Messiah made a gesture to cover the club owners by cutting her a check for $2500. Okay, well Ms. V definitely headed on to the bank first thing in the morning to cash that check. But, oops there were no funds available. Now Messiah admits that the check bounced and he would pay her the money. However, she went to the Daily News with the story on how the check bounced. Messiah wasn't having that so he told them about how she was drinking alcohol all night. And due to her DUI, the paparazzi were just waiting to get a picture with her drinking and the police were definitely ready and waiting to pounce on her. Then she came at Messiah like what are you trying to do/be, I'm a star! SMH. It looks like a professional relationship and even friendship may have been ruined.

As for Remy Ma, Messiah begged them to let her in the club but the club owners weren't having it. They didn't want that bad publicity…riiiight.

He Said, She Said

Vivica A. Fox

It didn’t take long for drama to erupt from Vivica’s Birthday party bash. Rumors are swirling on both sides that 1. Vivica was drinking all night although she was supposed to be keeping drinking to minimum after being arrested for DUI in March. 2. The check she was written for appearing bounced. Damn. Well Mz. T and I now the real story. And Remy Ma…she was just trying to get her party on too. Can’t catch a break huh? Get more of the story for now here.

Partaaay! Owwwww!

Mz. T and I had fuuuuun laaaast night! The parties were popping off at Club Sol in NYC last night for Vivica A. Fox and Swizz Beatz. While celebrity stylist Messiah threw one of his best clients a star-studded belated birthday bash, Swizz Beatz and co. snuck in after and got the club hype!

First Ms. V's party

Ms. V looked haute! She fixed up that hair (I know you've seen the recent candids and that hairline.) But to tell the truth, the pictures don't do her any justice. She just looked like a big, fabulous, glamazon.

Welcome! How you doin?

Hello all (or should I say one) and welcome to the EbonyShine blog. Greetings from Ebony and my partner in crime Mz. T. It seems like everyone has their own blog these days, and I want in! I have some things to say too! LOL anyway, let me calm down. I’ll be dishing about everything in black fashion, celebrities, music, beauty, etc, etc. But don’t get it twisted, Ebony does not discriminate. So, don’t be surprised to see some other faces. Because really when you get down to it hot fashion is hot fashion, good music is good music, and okay, you get the point.

Enough of my ranting! Thanks for coming and please tell a friend and come back soon!
